I fall to pieces
Each time I see you again
I fall to pieces
How can I be just your friend?

You want me to act like we've never kissed
You want me to forget (to forget)
Pretend we've never met (never met)

And I've tried and I've tried
But I haven't yet
You walk by and I fall to pieces

I fall to pieces
Each time someone speaks your name (speaks your name)
I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame

You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone who love me too (love me too)
The way you used to do (used to do)
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces
You walk by and I fall to pieces

why hasn't anyone commented? anyway, this is one of her best songs. so sad and haunting, about not being able to forget about an ex basically, right after you broke up, seems like the ex cheated or didnt really love her.

sucks for her, she keeps trying to forget the guy, but he walks by, and she has to start all over again. At least she's trying.

This song is obviously about unrequited love.

I fall to piecesEach time I see you againI fall to piecesHow can I be just your friend

She's heartbroken everytime she sees him so her wound opens up. He probably told her "Let's be friends, we're not good as lovers". Hinting that maybe they gave it a try and it didn't work out for him.

You want me to act like we've never kissedYou want me to forget, pretend we've never metAnd I've tried and I've tried but I haven't yetYou walk by, and I fall to pieces

Again hinting at the fact that they had a "romance" once probably not a relationship but assuming she thought it was going to be one.

You tell me to find someone else to loveSomeone who'll love me, too, the way you used to doBut each time I go out with someone newYou walk by and I fall to pieces

He wants her to occupy her thoughts elsewhere and on someone else. He may have just told her he loved her because that's what she wanted to hear.

    Like I said unrequited love.

Spirit Within Bertoldi Brothers Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards. when rules change Life in Your Way High life Battle Royale Word Alive, The This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone). And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together. Fast Car Tracy Chapman "Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
