You decided to explore the world ofAzeroth as a Rogue? You’re going to need will and patience in order to masterthe depths of this infamous class.
The competition will be tough andfree spots in groups/raids will be limited. You will need to prove yourperformance in order to become an asset in raids. If competition doesn’t boreyou and if your ego is sturdier than Thorium, then you might just have what ittakes to play a Rogue.
As a rogue, you will be wearing leather armor,allowing you to remain quick and agile in order to assassinate your victims…andgiant monsters. If you prefer to use robes and skirts to attract your preys, that’syour call.
1. Recommended races for Rogues in PvE
Here are our recommendations to pickthe best race for your Rogue in PvE!
Horde PvE : Orc
Fureur sanguinaire:Burst DPS burst that stacks withactive items (trinkets, potions…)
Solidité: Higher chance to resist stuns, possiblychanging the tide of a fight.
Alliance PvE : Human
Spécialisation Epée/Spécialisation Masse:Veryinteresting because it increases your chance to hit and makes it less likelyyour attacks will be dodged/parried/blocked, also makes it less likely yourhits will be glancing blows.
For Horde players, the best race forPvE is Orc. Bloodlust works very well with Déluge de lames), despite leading to slightsurvivability issues. For Alliance, unless you only wantto play with daggers (which is a possibility), nothing beasts Human.

Engineering
Perfectprofession for PvE (and PvP), allowing you to deal heavy area damage thanks toa variety of grenades and explosives. This profession allows you to use Coq de combat gnome, but also aPetit dragon en arcanitethat can breathe fire and deal significant fire damagein raids!
Mining
Materialsgained through Mining will allow you to easily level Engineering. Moreover, asa rogue you can easily secure ore in the wild: just sap or stun your enemieslong enough to mine it!

Leatherworking is handy for rogues,you can ste…pick up a bunch of leather and craft your own armor likeArmure de diablosaure(pre-raid BiS).
Skinning
You’rean expert at cutting up beasts’ corpses and leather is worth a lot, so why notpick up this profession? As for mining, use your crowd control abilities tosecure leather in the wild.
Alchemy
Are you addicted to consumables thatenhance your raid performance?
Combined with Herbalism, this allows you to beself-sufficient for pre-raid preparations. That being said, we recommend youpick engineering instead, because gathering professions are better on “alts”.
Herbalism
Thequintessential farming profession. Classic WoW is filled with herbs of allkinds, just turn herb detection on and run around looking at your radar.
3. Pros & Cons of playing a Rogue
The good parts:
- Sometalents are tailored for PvE and very done for swords & dagger specs.
- Potentoffensive and defensive cooldowns (mainly for survival)
- Threatisn’t much of an issue thanks to Vanish and Feint.
The badparts:
- Thesword spec is slightly better than the dagger spec but requires constant,intense focus.
- Lotsof competition for raid spots and item attribution.
- Handlingyour environment is important due to positional abilities and fragility.
- Thereare a lot of things you need to keep track of in fights: how much health yourtarget has left, which targets you want to attack next, how much energy youhave now and in the near future, combo points on your target, the remainingduration on Débiter, remaining behind your targets at all time, avoidingattacks and spells, using your cooldowns properly, and if you’re using swordspec, constantly keeping an eye on your swing timer so you don’t lose bonusattacks fromAttaque pernicieuse.
Learning how tosurvive is essential to masteryour class, you have one of the best abilities in the game to help you not loseyour buffs if things go awry.
Don’t forget that you have a wholearsenal of abilities for crowd control, and that you can do a lot to deal withunwanted pulls/mobs.
Additionally, remember your famous«kick» which can interrupt enemy spells, although some enemies areimmune.
In short, this isn’t asingle-button class thatyou can play half-asleep if you’re looking to do well on the DPS meters!
4. How to play your Rogue
The rogue rotation is fairly easy tounderstand but you still need to be able to adapt and anticipate.
Depending on your spec, the basicidea is: get some combo points (CP), useDébiter(depending on the target and on how many targets areinvolved in the fight, you won’t necessarily use 5 combo points for yourDébiter/Eviscération),get some more combo points, use a4/5 CP (usually no less than that) Eviscérationif you have enough time remaining onDébiter.
Depending on the situation, you canuse your 2 or 5 minutes CDs (taking into account the huge threat you’re aboutto generate).
It’s not always easy to follow thiscycle exactly, particularly when you have to kick spells, the target has to bemoved or if you yourself have to move somewhere for survival purposes (Ragnarosanyone?).
It’s very important for DPS playersto be able to anticipate and react properly to a variety of situations:
- Situation A:Everything’s going great and you’re progressing fine
- Situation B:Your party has to stop for one reason or another, it is then useful to use someabilities or play differently if you can anticipate this situation.
- Situation C:The tank dies, loses aggro, fell asleep before the pull or you’re being too(un)lucky and all your hits are critical strike, and you grab aggro from thetank. You need to be prepared for those things to happen and react accordingly.
Always keep in mind the duration of the cooldownof abilities Evasion,Disparitionand evenSprintwhich sometimes comes in handy. Being able tokeep your buffs is a nice asset if things go awry! A dead DPS is a useless DPS.
4.1. Poisons
Finally, let’s discuss Poisons andDoTs (Damage over Time).
Poisons are essentially ashort-duration enchantment on your weapons. You can’t modify their damage, buttheir proc chance is directly linked to your hit chance. If you miss or yourattack is parried or blocked, your poisons won’t be applied.
Keep in mind that some NPCs areimmune to poison. For example,elementals are, and therefore MANY mobs/bossesin Molten Core (phase 1) are. In this case, you’re better offusing Pierre à aiguiser dense, orPierre à aiguiserélémentaire(althoughthey’re more expensive...) Horde players can’t cumulate poison or whetstones with shamans’TotemFurie-des-ventsif you have one in your group. Itgives you additional attacks for your main hand weapon which is very powerful,especially for Swords or Mace users.

On a few Bosses, some niche poisonscan be used such asPoison douloureux IV,Poison affaiblissant IIorPoison de distractionmentale IIIwhichcan come in handy in some situations, although you’re going to need to figurethat which by yourselves!
5. The best PvE Rogue specs
Rogues have 3 main paths they canchoose from talent-wise:
Style 1: The most common path: 31points in the Combat tree and reaching WeaponSkillsas well asDéluge de lamesandPoussée d'adrénalinewith the remaining talent pointsspread out in the other trees depending on your weapon of choice.

Style 3: TheHemorrhagespecialist. You generally only want one player per raid using this specialty,as having more than one is useless. Notonly that, but even having only one isn’t necessary or even recommended. Thisspec is only interesting once you reach a certain level of gear and worldbuffs, as well as having many physical DPS players in your raid.

Thiscan actually be a downside: If you immediately stun a target on pull, your tankwill not be taking damage, which means he will not be getting rage from thatdamage, and will have more issues generating enough threat to keep aggro,possibly being forced to Taunt this main target, which can get problematic whenthere are multiple enemies in the fight.
Thiscan also be a problem if your group wants to move targets from one place toanother. If you randomly stun one, making it unable to move, you riskendangering your group.
Thisspec is only recommended for phases 4 & 5, in Ahn’Qiraj & Naxxramas. It’sfar from mandatory, and focuses on survival over DPS. Your job becomes to helpcontrol targets, or protect cloth users.
N.B.: It’s prettyrare for PvE rogues to use this spec, but it can be useful in the rightsituation.

7. About your statistics
It is often recommended to use thisor that stat instead of others, but do you understand why?
Without going into complex mathwhich wouldn’t necessarily help you, let’s try to set some fundamentals.
Melee attacks use pseudo dice rollsto determine whether your attacks will hit or not. Autoattacks and special attacks usedifferent formulas.
Only one dice roll determines whether your autoattacks hit or not (see thetable below), while special attacks use 2. The first is on the same table andascertains whether your attack will be blocked or hit, the second whether theattack will critically strike or not. If your attack is blocked, whether itcritically strikes or not is irrelevant, because it will do no damage either way.Only "glancing blow" are not taken into account for special attacks.
7.1. Here are all the outcomes that matter when you’re doing damage to your target
- Miss
- Dodge
- Parry
- Glancing Blow
- Block
- Critical Strike
- Hit
Mobs can only parry or block attacks comingfrom the front. If you’reattacking from their backs, this never happens. Note that while players can’tdodge attacks from the back, NPCs can.
Special Attacks’ hit cap is 9% forevery class. However, you need to take into account Weapon Skill and CriticalStrike Chance.
In this regard, rogues are favored:they get hit chance, critical strike chance and weapon skill in their talenttrees. You can easily get 5% hit & crit chance as well as 5 weapon skill. We’ll get back to this later.
7.2. Hit Cap for Rogues
Values for Hit Cap and other stats arerarely transparent. Tounderstand them, you need to understand some formulas involving your level 60stats (and your base weapon skill of 300 assuming you didn’t forget to level itup!) and your target’s level, which is 63 for Bosses, who have a defence statof 315.
Rogues must therefore take intoaccount the 5% hit chance and the 5 weapon skill from their talents: theirweapon skill becomes 305, and lose 2% of their chance to miss (indirectly worth3% hit chance) as well as a slightly higher chance to critically strike, and alower chance of their attacks getting dodged / parried / blocked
Once at the 9% hit cap, the statbecomes secondary and critical strike chance becomes more interesting.
NB : Mobs whose defence is at least 10 higherthan your weapon skill ignore 1% of your hit chance, which is why your hit capis 9% and not 8%.
7.3. Rogue’s stats
- 1 Attack Power
- 1 Agility= 1 Attack Power, + 0,03448% critical strike chance, + 2 armor and + 0,051% dodge (29 agi = 1% critical strike chance)
- 1 Strength= 1 Attack Power
- 1 Stamina= 10 Health
Spirit increases your Healthregeneration out of combat. Intelligenceincreases how fast you increase your weapon skills up to your cap (determinedby your level).
7.4. Glancing Blows / Weapon Skill
Glancing Blows only happen on yourautoattacks: they’re weaker hits that can’t critically strike. Glancing Blows are two separate events:
- First, a 10% chance on a monster of the same level as you, adding 10% for each level above your own. This means that against a level 63 boss, 40% of your autoattacks will be glancing blows. This is unavoidable.
- An autoattack that becomes a glancing blow does 35% less damage against a level 63 boss.
This is when Weapon Skill becomes important;every point above 300 will reduce this 35% penalty. To figure out the exacteffect, see this table whose values were confirmed during the Classic WoW beta,taking into account a level 63 boss has a defence of 315 and your weapon skillis 300+x. The value on the left is the difference between a mob’s defence andyour weapon skill. The value on the right is the damage reduction of glancingblows.
Becauseof this, 308 weapon skill (regardless of the bonus hit chance it gives) is theoptimal score against raid bosses.

Maximizing your performance inClassic WoW requires consumables. There are a lot of them and they usuallystack.
